On July 14, 1789, the sans-culottes took over la Bastille, a Paris jail and ammunition depot, to free their fellow citoyens oppressed by the monarchy. That was the starting point of the French Revolution.

We always marked Bastille Day in St. Louis, Mo where I grew up. After all the city is named after St. Louis of France! Happy Bastille Day!
